In Memory of Indiana State Trooper Andrew "Andy" Winzenread
who was killed by a truck. EOW: April 25, 1997, on I-74 near Greensburg, Indiana
"In the Line-of-Duty"
The newspaper mast-head screams!
Another life is over,
A waste, or so it seems.
The trucker that played that deadly game
Has taken one of our own,
Leaving his wife and little child
Weeping in their home
Just a "Motorist assist, a 10-46"
Turned into "policeman's tag,"
"See how close you can get to him,"
But he goes home in a body bag.
The object of this silly game
Is to see his hat take flight,
But no one ever expected him
To step into the road that night.
So, now, over ten years ago
This hero gave his life,
Leaving his child to be raised
Alone by his loving wife.
Who would have ever imagined
That they should fear truckers more than guns.
Now the law has been enacted
To protect our fathers and our sons.
So, when you see those flashing lights ahead
And move over to the other lanes,
Remember the ones who've lost their lives
To the truckers' deadly games.

Note: I was an active Police Officer when this incident occurred. I had met Trooper Winzenead just two weeks before this incident. He had just been assigned to Decatur County. I was looking forward to working with him. At the cemetery I stood in formation directly across
from his widow and new born infant. That was very difficult. Keep your life in order as we never know when we will be called upon to pay the supreme price.
